The University of Maryland is located outside of Washington, D.C. in College Park, Maryland.  As a public ivy school, the University of Maryland has a student population of 36,000 and is currently in the midst of huge fund-raising campaign for scholarships and renovations.

The school's nickname for the athletic department is the Terrapins, a type of turtle.  The slogan "Fear the Turtle" is chanted at games and appears on flags and T-shirts for the students.  School colors perhaps should be green and brown, the color of a turtle, but instead the school has selected black, red, white, and gold to represent their athletic teams.

As a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, the University of Maryland Terrapins regualarly compete against the Duke Blue Devils and the Virginia Cavaliers.  Home games are played at Byrd Stadium which cost $1 million to construct in 1950.  Byrd Stadium's capacity is 51,000.
